Need to know how to get from JFK Airport to Connecticut or Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess Counties in New York?
We recommend these options:
- Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central, then take a Metro-North train
- Uber/Lyft, taxi, car service, or shared shuttle to Grand Central, then take a Metro-North train
- Take a helicopter from JFK to Westchester County Airport, arrange pickup from there
We don’t recommend the subway for this journey. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) option is the better rail option.
The LIRR’s greater speed, more comfortable seating, overhead luggage racks, and outstanding on-time record is worth the minor cost difference compared to the subway. Taking the subway also requires at least one transfer, whereas the LIRR will take you directly to Grand Central.
Please note: The prices shown in the table below do not include your Metro-North fare. Metro-North fares vary by destination and peak/off-peak timing.

Taking a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train to Metro-North is the most balanced option. It offers speed and comfort at a good price.
For this option, you would:
- Take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica train station in Queens
- At Jamaica Station, board an LIRR train to Grand Central
- At Grand Central, transfer to a Metro-North train
Step 1 — AirTrain to Jamaica Station
At your terminal, follow signs for the AirTrain. Be sure to board the AirTrain going toward Jamaica. Do not head toward the Howard Beach station. This will take about 12–20 minutes.
The JFK AirTrain
- Operates 24/7/365
- Stops at all JFK terminals
- Free to ride between terminals
- Fare charged when exiting at Jamaica or Howard Beach
- AirTrain fare: $8.75 — paid at Jamaica Station, not at the airport
- Pay via OMNY (tap contactless card, phone, or smartwatch) or ticket machine
- Children under 5 ride free
Step 2 — LIRR from Jamaica to Grand Central Madison
At Jamaica Station, look for the ticket machines marked Long Island Rail Road. Buy your LIRR ticket here — the machine will also collect the $8.75 AirTrain fare in the same transaction. Select Grand Central as your destination.
You can also buy your LIRR ticket in advance using the MTA TrainTime app (iOS and Android). Note: the AirTrain fare cannot be paid through the app. You must pay that separately at the ticket machine.
The LIRR fare from Jamaica to Grand Central is $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak. Combined with the $8.75 AirTrain fare, your total will be $14.00 off-peak or $16.00 peak. See the full fare breakdown below.
The LIRR ride from Jamaica to Grand Central Madison takes approximately 20–25 minutes. You will arrive at Grand Central Madison, a subterranean station directly below Grand Central Terminal.
When you arrive at Grand Central Madison, follow the signs upstairs to Grand Central Terminal, where you’ll transfer to a Metro-North train.

Step 3 — Metro-North from Grand Central to the suburbs

A yellow cab from JFK to Manhattan has a flat rate of $70. This rate is set by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission and applies to any destination in Manhattan below 96th Street.
Walk out of arrivals, join the official taxi queue, and hop in. The flat rate works particularly well during rush hour, when Uber surges to $120+ and a yellow cab is still $70. For groups of up to four passengers, the flat rate covers everyone in the cab — better value per person as the group grows.
What gets added to the flat rate
Full fare breakdown — JFK to Grand Central
- Flat rate: $70.00
- MTA surcharge: $0.50
- Improvement surcharge: $1.00
- NY State congestion surcharge: $2.50
- Airport Access Fee: $2.00
- Congestion pricing toll: $0.75 (destinations south of 60th St. — Grand Central qualifies)
- Rush hour surcharge: $5.00 (weekdays 4–8 p.m. only)
- Overnight surcharge: $1.00 (8 p.m.–6 a.m. only)
- Tip: 15–20% (customary and expected)
- Typical all-in total: ~$77 before tip (off-peak, no overnight) · ~$82 with rush hour surcharge
A standard UberX to Grand Central Terminal runs $60–$80 under normal conditions — slightly cheaper than the yellow cab all-in during off-peak hours. The app identifies your terminal automatically and directs you to the designated pickup area.
During surge pricing — Friday evenings, Sunday nights, bad weather, holidays — fares can climb to $120 or more, at which point the yellow cab’s flat rate is often the better deal. Always check the app when you land before committing.
Tips for rideshare from JFK
- Pickup zones are terminal-specific — follow “Rideshare” signs in your terminal, not general curbside
- If surge is high, waiting 15–20 minutes in the terminal often catches it dropping
- Scheduling a ride before you land locks in a fare estimate
- Tip not included in app estimate — 15–20% is customary
A licensed car service takes you from your JFK terminal directly to your suburban front door — no transfers, no stations, no apps. Your driver is already expecting you. After a long flight, that predictability has real value, particularly for families, business travelers with luggage, or anyone arriving late when train frequency drops.
Cost varies widely depending on your destination, vehicle type, and number of passengers. Confirm all-in pricing including tolls and gratuity directly with the car service before booking. We recommend booking in advance, especially for early morning arrivals or holiday travel periods. A vetted operator: King and Queen Limousine Service.

The AirTrain + LIRR + Metro-North combination is the best public transit option. Take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station, board the LIRR to Grand Central Madison, then connect to Metro-North for your suburban destination. The total cost to Grand Central is $14.00–$16.00 depending on peak or off-peak travel. Metro-North fares vary by destination.
From Jamaica Station, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reaches Grand Central Madison in about 20–25 minutes. The subway has no one-seat ride to Grand Central from the JFK area — you’d need at least one transfer, adding time and complexity.
The LIRR costs $5.25–$7.25, compared to $3.00 for the subway. That small price difference is absolutely worth it when you factor in the LIRR’s advantages: it’s faster, more comfortable, has overhead luggage racks, and a better on-time record. And — no extra transfers.
Grand Central Madison (GCM) is the Long Island Rail Road’s East Side terminal. It opened in 2023 and is located underground, directly beneath the historic Grand Central Terminal.
Grand Central Terminal (GCT) opened in 1913 and is much more well-known — it’s the terminal you see on TV and in movies.
When your LIRR train arrives at GCM, take the escalators upward following signs for Grand Central Terminal. Going from GCM to GCT will take about 3–5 minutes on foot. Your Metro-North train will depart from Grand Central Terminal.
The AirTrain is free to ride between JFK terminals. The $8.75 fare is only charged when you exit the system at Jamaica Station — not when you board at the terminal.
At Jamaica Station, you will need to buy your LIRR ticket at the ticket machines marked Long Island Rail Road. When you do, the machine collects both the AirTrain fare ($8.75) and the LIRR fare ($5.25 off-peak / $7.25 peak) in the same transaction. These are two separate fares — there is no discount for paying together.
Yes — the MTA TrainTime app (iOS and Android) lets you purchase Metro-North tickets on your phone before you board. You can also buy at ticket machines or ticket windows inside Grand Central Terminal. Always buy before boarding — purchasing on the train costs significantly more.

LaGuardia is generally closer and the transit connection is somewhat simpler. The M60 bus, for example, can take you directly from your LaGuardia terminal to Metro-North’s Harlem–125th Street station without a train transfer.
JFK’s connection requires the AirTrain + LIRR before reaching Metro-North, adding time and one additional fare. That said, JFK offers far more flight options, particularly for international travel, so the choice often depends on which airport serves your route. If flights are comparable, LGA is typically more convenient for Westchester.
